Giulietta
Alfa Romeo is primed to unveil its new Giulietta hatch at the Geneva motor show to mark the company’s 100th anniversary. The Giulietta is a direct replacement for Alfa’s old 147 model, but the new car will only be available as a five-door hatchback. To give the Giulietta a sporting look, the rear door handles have been cleverly hidden in the window frame to give the appearance of a three-door coupé.
Five separate models will be unveiled at the Geneva show, including a pair of high performance Cloverleaf variants. The Cloverleaf versions of the Giulietta use a 235bhp version of Alfa’s 1750 TBi turbocharged petrol engine and, like all Giuliettas, come with a six-speed manual gearbox. Other engines on display at the Swiss show will be a 170bhp 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol turbo and a pair of 2.0-litre turbodiesels with 170bhp. When the Giulietta goes on sale in the UK in June, there will also be a 120bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the entry-level diesel will be a 105bhp 1.6-litre motor.
Every Giulietta will feature Alfa Start&Stop technology that switches off the engine when the car is stationary to save fuel and reduce emissions. Higher spec versions of the Giulietta will also come with Alfa’s ‘DNA’ selector that allows the driver to fine tune the car’s steering and accelerator response between Dynamic, Normal and All-weather settings. All Giuliettas will come with ESP traction control, climate and cruise controls, alloy wheels and a CD stereo with MP3 connection. Alfa will offer Sport and Premium option packs to let the buyer personalise their car. The Sport pack features larger alloy wheels, side skirts and sports seats, while the Premium pack provides rear parking sensors and Alfa Romeo’s Blue&Me infotainment system.
There’s no word on pricing yet for the Giulietta but Alfa Romeo promises it will be very competitive against the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. (both ar mentioned on our site)
